「想像をたくましくして・・・」 ― 2009/01/12 20:25
考古学者や、人類学者など書いている、先史時代に関する文献を読んでいると、ときどき出てくるのが、「想像をたくましくして・・・」という表現です。
遺跡や、遺物、人骨など、物的証拠をもとにして、その時代のさまざまな事柄を調べる、考えるという職業柄、むやみに憶測で物事を語らない、という配慮が感じられます。
実際、遺物や人骨などが、出土したとしても、その数が少なければ簡単には証拠として扱わない慎重さがあるようです。
もちろん、年代測定の誤りや、さまざまな例外が考えられる為、より多くの証拠の積み重ねが重要という訳です。
しかし、慎重になりすぎていても何も語れない、ということになってしまうので、証拠としては十分でないにしても、それを元に一つの可能性を語ることはできます。
そのような時に使われる表現が、「想像をたくましくして・・・」となるようです。
事実だけを並べられても、読んでいる素人には、そこから何が見えてくるのか分かりませんので、このような表現があれば、こちらもいろいろと想像が膨らみ、読んでいて楽しくなるというものです。
